Investigating the Implementation of SAP S/4 HANA ERP at Orica Ghana Limited: Benefits and Challenges

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges and benefits of the SAP S/4HANA ERP system implemented at Orica Ghana Limited, a mining services provider in Ghana. The study uses a qualitative research method, using semi-structured interviews and a literature review to understand the system's benefits and challenges. The study focuses on employees from different managerial levels within Orica Ghana Limited and analyses the interview data using NVivo software. The findings reveal that while the ERP system offers advantages in data management, process optimisation, and operational efficiency, it also faces challenges such as high implementation and training costs, infrastructure constraints, system complexity, and change management issues. The study also evaluates the current state of implementation by evaluating key performance indicators and system utilisation metrics. The study provides recommendations to address these challenges and maximise the benefits of the ERP system implementation. These include developing comprehensive change management strategies, establishing robust data management protocols, implementing ongoing training and upskilling programs, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, and embracing a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. The findings have implications for organisations in the Ghanaian mining industry and the African context, as well as academia, industry professionals, and policymakers. They contribute to the body of knowledge on ERP system implementation and digital transformation, informing future research and helping industry professionals and policymakers develop effective strategies for successful technology implementation and optimisation across various sectors and regions.
