Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Investigating the Implementation of SAP S/4 HANA ERP at Orica Ghana Limited: Benefits and Challenges(University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. Ghana, 2024-11) Kingsley Sedem, DonkorThis study investigates the challenges and benefits of the SAP S/4HANA ERP system implemented at Orica Ghana Limited, a mining services provider in Ghana. The study uses a qualitative research method, using semi-structured interviews and a literature review to understand the system's benefits and challenges. The study focuses on employees from different managerial levels within Orica Ghana Limited and analyses the interview data using NVivo software. The findings reveal that while the ERP system offers advantages in data management, process optimisation, and operational efficiency, it also faces challenges such as high implementation and training costs, infrastructure constraints, system complexity, and change management issues. The study also evaluates the current state of implementation by evaluating key performance indicators and system utilisation metrics. The study provides recommendations to address these challenges and maximise the benefits of the ERP system implementation. These include developing comprehensive change management strategies, establishing robust data management protocols, implementing ongoing training and upskilling programs, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, and embracing a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. The findings have implications for organisations in the Ghanaian mining industry and the African context, as well as academia, industry professionals, and policymakers. They contribute to the body of knowledge on ERP system implementation and digital transformation, informing future research and helping industry professionals and policymakers develop effective strategies for successful technology implementation and optimisation across various sectors and regions.Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Moderating Role of Stress Management Strategies in the Relationship Between Sources of Stress and Academic Performance Among Post-Graduate Students in Ghana: The Case of University Of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa(University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. Ghana, 2024-11) Joyce, AsamoahThis study examined stress management measures as an intervention in assessing the relationship between stressors and academic achievement among postgraduate students at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa, Ghana. The aims were to investigate the origins of stress, ascertain the stress-management strategies employed by students, and evaluate the impact of stressors on their academic performance. The theoretical approach was based on the Transaction Model of Stress and Psychological Well-being Theories. Data was collected from a sample of 224 students enrolled in the Faculty of Integrated Management Science. The findings revealed that academic workload and financial pressures were the most significant sources of stress, followed by family responsibilities and uncertainty about the future. While physical activities, relaxation techniques, hobbies, and positive cognitive strategies were commonly used for stress management, seeking social support was less frequent. The study demonstrated that effective stress management strategies had a positive impact on academic performance, whereas sources of stress alone did not significantly affect performance. Recommendations for students include prioritizing time management, engaging in stress-reducing activities, seeking social support, and developing positive cognitive strategies. Recommendations for stakeholders emphasize providing financial assistance, accessible mental health services, opportunities for extracurricular activities, and reasonable academic workload expectations.Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Effects of Reward System on the Performance of Engineers in Ghana: Evidence from Selected Public Sector Organisations in Tarkwa(University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. Ghana, 2024-07) Jemima Akos, BedzrahModern business has learned that employee performance is one of the keys to organizational success as a result of the establishment of human resources as a crucial discipline and a distinct philosophy. The literature provides scholarly analysis of reward systems and employee performance. The review of related literature permits comparison of the findings of this study and similar pieces of research to provide a basis for accepting earlier conclusions. The design employed for this study was a descriptive survey research design. The descriptive survey design involves the collection of data within a short span of time from a sample of the target population and thereby describing the characteristics of the event that pertains to the population through the selected sample. The study aimed to investigate how Reward systems at the organization perceive employee performance evaluation in light of the mediating role that performance of employee plays in the development of the organization and the growth of the Ghanaian economy in general. The study concluded that the control variables did not influence employee performance significantly. The study identified that engineers in PSOs have high propensity to both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. Appropriate extrinsic and intrinsic rewards lead to increased performance of engineers in the public sector. Although policy does not moderate the relationship between extrinsic reward and employee performance, it plays very critical role in determining the levels and values of extrinsic reward administered in public sector organizations.Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Investigating Strategic Maintenance Management Practices: Evidence from Prestea Underground Mine(University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. Ghana, 2024-11) Jibril Sulemana, GamboThis study investigates strategic maintenance management practices at Prestea Underground Miney. The study aims to assess current maintenance procedures, identify their challenges, and investigate strategic maintenance management practices. A quantitative technique was used, and a structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 162 employees. The study results showed that preventative measures, performance monitoring, and regular inspections are among the maintenance methods that significantly increase production efficiency. The analysis within the constructs demonstrated strong internal consistency, and dependability was indicated by Cronbach's Alpha coefficients ranging from 0.82 to 0.88. A strong favourable correlation between production outputs and strategic maintenance management was further validated by correlation analysis. The study concludes that optimizing production performance in mining operations requires appropriate maintenance management. To reduce equipment downtime, management is advised to prioritize preventative maintenance, improve training initiatives, and invest in cutting-edge maintenance solutions. Future studies should examine how digital technologies may be integrated into maintenance procedures and evaluate how this will affect output in the long run. This research advances our knowledge of using strategic maintenance management to increase operational effectiveness in the mining industry.Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on the Mining Industry of Ghana: The Mediating Role of Institutional Quality(University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. Ghana, 2024-05) Festus Kwame, YalleyAfter the debt crisis of developing nations in the late 1980s, which affected creditworthiness, foreign direct investment (FDI) started to be seen as the primary driver of growth in the developing world, especially in Africa. As a result, there was a sharp increase in foreign investment in this region of the world, with emerging nations receiving a larger proportion of the inflows. Even though foreign direct investment (FDI) is often regarded as the catalyst for economic growth and the entry point to development for developing nations, including Ghana, there is a notable disparity between the region's poor institutional governance and FDI flows, particularly in the natural resource sector. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the impact of mining FDI as part of capital or labor that flows to developing economies including the Ghanaian economy with a sharp focus on the mediating role of institutional governance. Data from the World Development Indicators (WDI) website were utilized over the whole study period, including all variables. As a result, these variables constitute secondary data that is made available to the public on the website. The study employs annual time series data spanning the period 1996 - 2020. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test is employed to check for stationarity and order of integration. The Phillips Perron test was also performed as a robustness check to the ADF test. To determine if unit roots are present in the time series data used for the investigation, a stationary test is run. The findings showed that, among other factors, trade openness and market size had a major impact on FDI's motivations in Ghana. Overall, the implications of the study’s results extend beyond academic research to inform policy formulation, investment decision-making, and corporate practices in the mining sector, with the ultimate goal of fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
